We’re happy to announce that Screen Ruler just recently has passed the incredible milestone of 100,000 total downloads on SourceForge.
To mark this important occasion, SourceForge has awarded the Screen Ruler project the rare Open Source Excellence badge.
This highest receivable achievement is only given to open source projects that passed 100,000 total or 10,000 monthly downloads.
The badge, now displayed by default on the project page, clearly highlights the impact Screen Ruler has had as a project in passed years.
We thank SourceForge for this recognition and for continuously hosting Screen Ruler!

Screen Ruler is a lightweight and configurable ruler tool for Windows Desktop.
It allows you to measure the size of elements on the screen in different units, including pixels, centimeters and inches, either using a two-dimensional, rectangular ruler scale or a one-dimensional, horizontal or vertical scale.
The ruler can be moved and resized precisely using either the mouse or the keyboard, custom marking lines can be added, and it allows fine-granular calibration to different screen resolutions.

Development started in 2017, being hosted on SourceForge from the beginning on.
Since then, Screen Ruler has seen huge feature upgrades and collected well over 100,000 downloads in just over 5 years.
Nowadays, you can find Screen Ruler on SourceForge, on GitHub and on Chocolatey.
The latest update, v.0.10.0, was released one week ago.
Screen RulerDisplay Scaling and Calibration with Screen Ruler2022-09-04T00:00:00+02:002022-09-04T00:00:00+02:00http://bluegrams.com/blog/2022/09/display-scaling-and-calibration-with-screenruler
Measuring distances on screen across different displays, resolutions, scaling factors and for different application cases is non-trivial.
Beginning with v.0.10.0, ScreenRuler provides enhanced mechanisms for automatic screen resolution adaptation and ruler calibration.
This document provides background on these features as well as guidance on when and how to use them effectively.

Important: Before reading on, please make sure to have ScreenRuler v.0.10.0 (2022-09) or later installed.

Why is this relevant?

As monitors are diverse in screen resolutions and pixel densities, various factors have to be considered when measuring distances on screen, most importantly:

The raw pixel density of a display, i.e. how many screen pixels fit into one physical inch, measured in dots-per-inch (DPI), depends on the used monitor device.

The relation between raw pixel density and virtual/logical pixel density, as often, pixel densities appear to software and users as unified across devices while monitors have different physical characteristics in reality.
For Windows, display scaling for high-DPI monitors additionally comes in as an additional issue.

Mappings between pixel scales and physical units (such as inches, centimeters, …) may have to be adjusted depending on monitor or use case (e.g. when measuring images or documents on screen).

Wikipedia provides a nice write-up with further details on monitor DPI and the highlighted issues here.

What does ScreenRuler provide?

Since v.0.10, ScreenRuler is per-monitor DPI-aware by default, i.e. it …

… automatically and dynamically scales the UI according to Windows’ display scaling settings of the current monitor

… can adjust ruler scales according to Monitor pixel densities

The latter feature can be configured in the app via the ruler calibration dialog, which can be accessed either via the context menu (Calibrate Ruler) or by pressing
Ctrl+K
.

Ruler calibration provides multiple built-in DPI scaling behaviors with different characteristics that are suitable for different use cases:

Use scaled pixels
: Ruler scales will be based on the virtual/logical DPI values provided by Windows (i.e. 96dpi by default). Additionally, the ruler scale will be scaled corresponding to Windows’ display settings for scaling on high-DPI monitors (e.g. assuming 120dpi for a scaling of 125%).

When to use? Use this mode to measure items that are scaled by the OS and/or unaware of monitor pixel densities.
Measurements in this mode might not correspond to physical “off-screen” dimensions.

Automatic (per-monitor)
: Ruler scales will be based on the raw DPI values of each monitor, as provided by the OS. Note that raw DPI values might differ slightly for each monitor and might not match virtual or scaled DPI values directly.
In this mode, the ruler scale is dynamically adjusted to the raw pixel density of the current monitor.

When to use? This mode should provide the most accurate mapping from physical “off-screen” dimensions to “on-screen” dimensions.
Use this mode to accurately measure items in physical dimensions (such as inches, centimeters etc.)

Manual
: Manually specify monitor DPI values on which ruler scales will be based. There are two ways to do this: You can directly specify a custom DPI value in the ruler calibration dialog under Monitor DPI -> Horizontal Scaling (DPI)/Vertical Scaling (DPI). Or, you can calibrate ruler scales from the current dimensions of the ruler under the Measuring Unit tab (see Step-by-step guides). Ruler scales will always be computed from this fixed pixel density value independent of current display scaling or monitor DPI.

When to use? Use this mode to calibrate ruler scales independent of OS-based automatic display scaling or monitor pixel densities.
Useful e.g. if automatic scale adaptations fail or to adjust to an application-specific scale.

Manual (per-monitor)
: Similar to
Manual
, however, instead of specifying one global DPI value, allows different configurations for each connected monitor. Select the monitor to calibrate from the dropdown below the scaling behavior selection.

When to use? To calibrate ruler scales in multi-display setups where each display requires a different calibration.
Especially useful if automatic scale adaptations fail.

Step-by-step guides

Calibrate ruler scales to given reference length

Using the ruler calibration dialog, you can calibrate the ruler scales to existing reference lengths, either on-screen or off-screen:

Open the ruler calibration dialog (by pressing
Ctrl+K
) and select
Manual
from the DPI scaling behavior dropdown.

In the tab control, switch to Measuring Unit.

Select the measuring unit of interest from the appearing dropdown.

Now, using the standard manipulation methods, adjust the size of the ruler tool to the desired dimensions (e.g. to match a given scale or a given item on or off screen).

Finally, using the given fields in the calibration dialog, define to which dimensions (horizontal and vertical) the current size of the ruler tool should correspond in the selected measuring unit.

ScreenRuler will adjust ruler scale computation such that the defined dimensions match the current size of the ruler tool.

Set monitor-specific scaling in multi-display setup

When multiple monitors are attached to a system, each monitor might have a different pixel density or display scaling.
In case automatic scaling fails or if custom calibration is required, you can use the ruler calibration dialog to manually specify DPI values for each connected monitor:

Open the ruler calibration dialog (by pressing
Ctrl+K
) and select
Manual (per-monitor)
from the DPI scaling behavior dropdown.

In the dropdown listing the connected monitor devices, select the monitor you wish to configure. You can identify the connected monitors by pressing the button labeled with
?
to the right of the dropdown.

In the tab control, switch to Monitor DPI.

In the numeric selection box to the right of the label
Horizontal Scaling
, select the desired DPI value. Note how the ruler scale is directly updated whenever this value changes.

If required, select a different DPI value for the vertical direction. To do this, tick the checkbox to the left of
Vertical Scaling
.

The first update of Vividl in 2022 brings some bigger changes under the hood. Up until now, Vividl has used youtube-dl as its default video download engine. However, as development on this widely popular project has slowed down recently, Vividl switches to yt-dlp in v.0.6.0, a more up-to-date version of the original project. This change will not only bring better support for many websites, but also faster download speeds. The Windows installer and portable releases of the new version ship with the new engine by default. The included yt-dlp version is 2021.12.27.

What else is new

Version 0.6.0 of Vividl introduces a new automation mode. When this mode is activated, Vividl automatically scans your clipboard for matching URLs and directly fetches the matched URLs into the video list without any manual importing or pasting. This new mode can be activated via "Automate -> Auto-import URLs from Clipboard" in the main menu or by typing "F3" as shortcut and can be configured under "Settings -> Advanced".

Additionally, the new version brings various smaller improvements: MP4 video conversion can now optionally make use of a CUDA-based GPU (if available) for faster processing. MP3 downloads can now integrate thumbnail images in the final file.

The full list of changes, including minor improvements:

New: Smart Automation mode: Auto-import & download URLs from clipboard

New: Add option for CUDA-supported FFmpeg conversion.

New: Add thumbnails to mp3 conversion downloads (with "Add metadata to files" setting).

New: Minor UI tweaks (e.g. in main menu & tool bar)

New: Allow setting custom downloader arguments.

Changed: Switch from youtube-dl to yt-dlp as default download engine (faster download speed).

Fixed: Crash with invalid URLs in fetch window.

The first major feature update of Screen Ruler in a few months brings a whole range of new features that broaden the range of possibilities of working with Screen Ruler. Most of the new features were implemented based on user feedback, to add your own feedback or suggestions, always feel free to open an issue on GitHub or start a discussion on SourceForge.

What's new

Ruler flipping

The first major new feature is the possibility to flip the ruler scale horizontally or vertically. In 1D horizontal or vertical mode, this flips the measurement scale to allow measuring from right to left or from bottom to top. In 2D mode, it additionally allows to change the orientation of the right angle of the ruler. By flipping horizontally, the vertically ruler moves to the right of the horizontal ruler. By flipping vertically, the horizontal ruler moves to the bottom of the vertical ruler. Using keyboard shortcuts, horizontal flipping can be achieved by pressing
F
, vertical flipping by pressing
Shift+F
.

Hypotenuse and angles

Secondly, v.0.9 adds the option to show the length of the hypotenuse in 2D mode as well as the size of the angles enclosed by the ruler triangle. There are two options here: either the right-angled triangle is defined by the horizontal and vertical ruler lengths or by the cursor position. Hypotenuse measuring can be toggled using
H
via keyboard shortcuts.

Command-line arguments

Next, the new version of Screen Ruler introduces command-line arguments. You can view them by executing
screenruler.exe --help
from a terminal. To give some examples,
screenruler.exe -x 10 -y 10 --width 600 --height 400
sets a startup position and size for Screen Ruler.
screenruler.exe --title "Mozilla Firefox"
directly measures the window titled "Mozilla Firefox" on startup.

More

All changes of this version, including minor new features:

New: Horizontal and vertical flipping of ruler scale

New: Optionally show hypotenuse ("H") and angles in 2D ruler mode

New: Command-line arguments to set startup location or measure opened window

With the start of Hacktoberfest in early October, we asked for help with translation of this app to other languages. This new version includes all Hacktoberfest contributions of the last month. In total, Vividl received 10 pull requests by 10 different contributors. These contributions added translations for 9 languages, with updates for 2 more. The newly added languages are: Italian Hebrew Polish Welsh Portuguese Arabic French Dutch Swedish Thanks to all the awesome contributors for their help! You can find the names and GitHub profiles of all contributors in the full list of contributors on GitHub. You can also see all of their contributions during Hacktoberfest here. Also make sure to read about the recent unjustified takedown of youtube-dl, the tool which Vividl uses in the background. The included youtube-dl version has been updated to 2020.11.01.1.
The third update of this year brings some major additions to Screen Ruler. Most notably, version 0.6 brings a new two-dimensional ruler mode that allows you to measure the screen in horizontal and vertical direction simultanously using a rectangular ruler scale.

What's new

You can enable the new two-dimensional ruler mode by selecting 'Ruler Mode -> Two-Dimensional' in the context menu. This allows you to resize the scale horizontally and vertically as well as settings markers in both directions. Also, when selecting a window on the screen for automatic measuring (press 'Z'), now both its width and height will be measured at the same time. For quick switching between the new two-dimensional mode and the original horizontal and vertical modes, you can also use
Space
.

The other major addition of this update is the new Slim Scale Mode which you can via the context menu or by pressing
J
. If enabled, only a reduced and slimmer ruler scale is shown, hiding less of the actual items on screen.

Lastly, the ruler application is now hidden from the task bar by default and displayed as an icon in the notification area. To disable this behaviour, uncheck the corresponding option in the settings.

After the last update being released just one month ago, Screen Ruler v.0.5 again brings a couple of useful features that extend the possibilities of the tool. This time, most of the additions come from external contributors.

What's new

Besides automatically marking the center and thirds of the ruler, version 0.5 also adds the possibility to mark the golden ration in both direction. Press
G
to toggle the new markers. Also, to make the ruler markers more distinguishable, you can now switch on optional marker symbols (from Settings -> Advanced -> Show marker symbols). This option adds a different symbol next to each type of marking line, with numbering for custom markers. Both of these features were added by an external contributor (see Credits).

The new version also attempts to improve the possibilities to adapt the ruler tool to different displays with different scaling values. For this reason, a new calibration window is added. It allows setting concrete screen properties as well as dynamically adapting the scale based on a preview panel. To access calibration, press
Ctrl+K
. For more information about this feature, visit https://sourceforge.net/p/screenruler/discussion/howto/thread/22319514a3/.

Screen RulerVersion 0.5 (2020-02) After the last update being released just one month ago, Screen Ruler v.0.5 again brings a couple of useful features that extend the possibilities of the tool. This time, most of the additions come from external contributors. What's new Besides automatically marking the center and thirds of the ruler, version 0.5 also adds the possibility to mark the golden ration in both direction. Press G to toggle the new markers. To access calibration, press Ctrl+K. For more information about this feature, visit https://sourceforge.net/p/screenruler/discussion/howto/thread/22319514a3/. All changes, summarized: New: Marker for Golden Ratio New: Symbols for marker lines (optional) New: Spanish translation Changed: Added window for easy ruler calibration Credits Special thanks for this version go to: - Jens Bråkenhielm: goldern ratio markers & marker symbols - Leandro Martín Drudi: Spanish translation Links Binary download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/screenruler/files/v.0.5.0/ Source code: https://github.com/Bluegrams/ScreenRuler/releases/tag/v.0.5Bug Fixes for First Version2020-01-30T00:00:00+01:002020-01-30T00:00:00+01:00http://bluegrams.com/blog/2020/01/bug-fixes-for-first-version

Version 0.1.1 (2020-01)
